Dear Families,
As we head into the spring, I know many of you have questions about the Regents exams. In a typical year, Regents exams are administered in June and August in 10 subject areas. This June, only 4 Regents subject exams will be in administered – Algebra I, English Language Arts, Living Environment, and Earth Science. These exams will be administered in person in our school building. There will be no additional Regents administration scheduled for August. Certain students are eligible for Regents exam waivers, which count as a passing score for that exam for graduation. Waivers are available for all Regents exams subjects, including the 4 exams being administered in person. (See eligibility criteria described below.)
It is very important you let us know if you would like your student to participate in this year’s Regents exams so that we can prepare and create a testing schedule that ensures the health and safety of all of our students. Please read on for more information about this year’s exams.
What Regents exams will be administered in the school building?
Only 4 Regents exams will be administered in June. The 4 exams are:
• Algebra I
• English Language Arts
• Living Environment
• Earth Science
The following Regents exams have been cancelled for June:
• Algebra II
• Geometry
• Chemistry
• Physics
• Global History & Geography
• United States History & Government
How will you keep my student safe during in-person test administration? Health and safety are our first priorities. We are asking for you to sign up so we can create testing schedules and room assignments that allow for social distancing protocols. All schools will adhere to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Visit schools.nyc.gov/RTShealthsafety to learn more.
How do I sign up for the exams?
If you would like your child to participate in this year’s State exams, please notify us at {insert preferred contact method (i.e. googleform)} by this {insert date}.
Is my student eligible for a Regents waiver?
If your student is eligible for a Regents waiver, they can use this waiver toward graduation requirements and are not required to pass that Regents exam. To be eligible for a Regents exam waiver in June or August 2021, your student must pass the course sequence leading up to that Regents exam. You may wish to have your student take the Regents exam if they are not on track toward passing all of the necessary courses by June.
Waivers are available for all 10 Regents exam subject areas. For more information on whether your student is eligible to receive a Regents waiver, contact your student’s guidance counselor or a school administrator. You can also review your student’s progress toward graduation in your NYC Schools Account by visiting schools.nyc.gov/nycsa.
Can a student earn an Advanced Regents Diploma with a Regents Waiver? Yes. Any student granted a waiver is not required to pass such exam(s) necessary for any diploma type. This includes the Regents with Advanced Designation.
If a student receives a Regents Waiver can they take the exam in the future? Yes. Any student granted a waiver is eligible to take a Regents exam during a future administration.
If my student is already learning in the building, do I still need to sign up for the exams? Yes. You must let us know if you would like your student to take a Regents exam, whether they are learning in-person or remotely.
My student is fully-remote. Are they expected to come in to take the exams? No. Students receiving fully-remote instruction are not expected to come to school to take the Regents exams. However, if you would like your student to take an exam, they can be included—just notify us using the contact information above.
If my student does not take the exams, will they be penalized?
No. Any student who does not participate in the 2021 June Regents exams will not be penalized. Your student may waive a Regents exam requirement for graduation provided that they meet specific eligibility criteria as described above.
When are the exams?
The exams will be administered within the following dates:
• English Language Arts – Thursday, June 17
• Living Environment – Tuesday, June 22
• Algebra I – Wednesday, June 23
• Earth Science – Thursday, June 24
